About

25 years of infrastructure.
Built to last longer than the audit cycle.

The Vision Data Platform is the technology DBBuilder (Est. 2001) has built over 25 years — the IP foundation the Vision Companies family runs on. It is the result of building software in environments where failure means a compliance violation, a breach notification, or a student's record in the wrong hands. That pressure shaped an architecture that treats compliance as infrastructure, not a checklist.

Founder
Chris Therriault

I started DBBuilder in 2001 because I believed regulated industries deserved software that understood their constraints — not enterprise software that ignored them and called it a roadmap item.

SchoolVision was the first product: campus financial operations, student identity, and SIS integration for K-12 districts. FERPA compliance wasn't a feature we added — it was in the first schema. That discipline compounded. PCI DSS in 2008. HIPAA in 2015. Multi-tenant isolation, RBAC, and immutable audit logging built into every product that followed.

In 2020 we migrated 160 on-premises servers to Azure hybrid cloud. Zero downtime. In 2023 we integrated Claude, Gemini, and Veo as first-class platform primitives — not wrappers. The same architecture that handles FERPA student records handles AI inference in regulated contexts. That's the point.

The platform is bootstrapped and profitable. It has never needed a funding round to ship production compliance software. That independence is a feature — we build what our customers need, not what optimizes a valuation.

History

How the platform was built.

Not designed from a whiteboard. Each capability was earned in a production environment under real compliance pressure.

2001
DBBuilder, Inc. founded

Incorporated in Washington State. Built the first multi-tenant SQL Server data platform for small business clients. Bootstrapped from day one.

2003
SchoolVision launched

First EdTech SaaS product — campus financial operations, student identity, and SIS integration for K-12 districts. FERPA compliance built in from the first schema.

2008
PCI DSS compliance achieved

Full card-data handling certification. Built the tokenization and audit-logging patterns that still run on the platform today.

2015
HIPAA BAA capability added

PHI isolation, 7-year retention, and Business Associate Agreement support extended to healthcare customers on the same platform.

2020
Azure cloud migration

Migrated a 160-server on-premises datacenter to Azure hybrid cloud — SQL Server to Azure SQL, VB.NET to C# ASP.NET Core, 300+ static sites to Azure Static Web Apps. Zero downtime.

2023
AI-native architecture

Integrated Claude, Gemini, and Veo as first-class platform primitives. RAG pipelines, liveness detection, document validation, and agentic workflows in production.

2024
Four divisions operating

SchoolVision, ServiceVision AI, StartupVision, and MobileID.ai — four distinct market verticals, one shared compliance and infrastructure core.

2026
SOC 2 Type I on track

Formal attestation in progress. The patterns have been in production for over two decades — the audit catches up to the architecture.

What runs it.

The platform is polyglot by necessity — 25 years of production delivery means using the right tool for each workload, not defending a single-language orthodoxy.
